The Underestimated Value of Garages

Oftentimes, we look at the garage as just a place to park the car and nothing more., underestimating its value. However, the garage is much more than that: it not only provides valuable storage space but also becomes its own flexible space for facilitating games, guests, gyms, and more.

Let’s not forget that garages are growing in size. Take this statistic for example:

In 1971, less than 40 percent of new homes in the US could fit two or more cars, but by 2007, 63 percent were capable of doing so, with 19 percent having garages that could fit 3 or more cars.

Garage doors are also becoming a feature part of a home, with new designs and options becoming readily available. For instance, doors made of fiberglass are trending because of their versatility and how easy it is to take care of them. Not to mention, wood garage doors are growing in popularity because of their ability to add architectural detail such as rural charm or classic elegance.

Homebuilders Love Garages

Homebuilders are becoming increasingly aware that a garage is a huge component of whether a home is able to sell. Because of this, homebuilders are pulling out all the stops in terms of garage designs.

For example, some designers design garages with spacious windows and at least 40 feet of backup space. In addition to being large enough for two parked cars, garages now have more storage space through the use of custom cabinets and wall units. They’re also coming with extra features such as insulation, dedicated workshop areas, utility sinks, mudrooms, and much more.

With these extra features, builders aren’t skimping on space either. With this increase, garage spaces are becoming increasingly easy to convert. For instance, estates in Del Sur, California have two garages and one can be converted into a guest suite. If that doesn’t suit your fancy, they can also be utilized as laundry rooms or even a craft room.

Garages aren’t what they used to be, and it’s time we take another look at them. Don’t let yours turn into a shed for your cars – they can be much more.
