The Benefits of a Man Cave: It’s Good For Him and Her

What is a ‘man cave’ exactly? It’s a space in the home where the men are free to express their manliness – both in decor and the main purpose of the space. Yes, man caves appear to be less trend and more staple of our modern culture. With that said, every man, or woman, deserves a man cave’s benefits.

According to Sam Gosling, a University of Texas at Austin psychology professor, “It’s incredibly important to be in one’s own space and have it resonate with who you are.”

A 2010 study by the University of Southern California of couples in their 30s and 40s showed that men enjoyed lower cortisol levels when they were able to spend solo leisure time in their own homes. Cortisol is the steroid hormone released by the human body in response to stress. Essentially, the study confirms that a man’s stress levels decreased when he had his own space to escape to.

A man cave not only means private time for him – it’s private time away FROM him, too.

Traditionally, it’s women who influence the main living areas, leaving some men feeling alienated in their own home (even if it’s only subconsciously). Even when couples collaborate to design and decorate their home, creating personal space is always important.

When it comes to designing a man cave, it’s incredibly important that there are no compromises. A space that satisfies a man’s psychosocial and emotional needs is much less likely to evolve out of someone else’s decisions.

From man caves dedicated to model trains, to home gyms and woodworking stations, there’s no limit to the space you can create.

With home theaters, surround sound systems, bars, game tables, even space for all of that sports memorabilia, a man cave is not the place for compromise!

For those designing a new house, the lower level, or sub-garage area, is an ideal spot for a man cave. Or, if you can afford the room, turn the entire garage into your man’s ultimate retreat!

At the end of the day, it’s nice to have a sanctuary in the sanctuary of your own home.
