Police Supercars: Real vs. Fake

Jeremy Clarkson once quipped, “Speed has never killed anyone. Suddenly becoming stationary, that’s what gets you.” Employed to prevent that endgame, to protect and serve, are the police. And in some countries, they’re up against the fastest and most luxurious cars on the planet.

In those select corners of the globe, a Dodge Charger simply won’t get the job done, so cops in Germany, Italy and Dubai turn to supercars of their very own to roam the streets and fight the need for speed. These police cars are some of the fastest cars on earth, and they’ll certainly make you think twice before taking your car out of the garage; supercar or not.

There are myriad photos of police supercars circulating the World Wide Web. Some are real. Some are not. Some are ridiculous, and we’ve got photos of them all.

1 – Lamborghini Gallardo

After receiving one of these beauties from Lamborghini via donation in 2004, the Italian Police wrote a check for $166,000 one year later for another. Molto buona. Top speed: 190MPH. Horses: 500.

2 – Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera

There is no shortage of money and exotic cars in the oil-rich nation of Saudi Arabia, so in a publicity stunt, this 19-year-old decided to turn his Gallardo into the fastest cop car in Jeddah. Apparently the Lambo never made it onto the streets and the real cops ordered the young man to change it back to its original color. Top speed: 202MPH. Horses: 513.

3 – Bugatti Veyron

Once the fastest car in the universe – the Hennessey Venom GT just topped out at 270MPH – there’s just no getting away from a Bugatti Veyron. However, this asphalt-scorching beast isn’t necessarily used to catch speeding exotic cars. Instead, the Dubai Police Department’s fleet of supercars is used to market the department’s services and to remove the barrier between the police and the community. Hey, they said it, not me. Top speed: 253MPH. Horses: 1,200.

4 – Maserati GranTurismo

Known peculiarly as one of the curviest cars on the road, the Maserati GranTurismo certainly has the looks to fit in among the world’s sexiest cars, but this ridiculous, Transformers-inspired GranTurismo isn’t deceiving anyone. Top speed: 185MPH. Horses: 454.

5 – Mercedes Brabus CLS Rocket

Packed with a twin-turbo V12 this is the fastest sedan in our solar system. The autobahn is it’s home and that sound you hear is of the speeding German’s yelling “Nein” every time they see the Brabus CLS Rocket’s flashing lights in the rearview mirror. Top speed: 225MPH. Horses: 730.

6 – Ferrari Laferrari

Only recently released, Ferrari will make just 30 of these stallions. If there was ever going to be a police supercar in North America, it would only roam the sun-soaked streets of Los Angeles – sorry Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – and it would have to be the Laferrari. It’s the perfect way to show those Hollywood Head Honcho types that you can keep pace even though the average speed in invariably gridlocked L.A. is like 40MPH. Oh, Motor Trend Garage writer/designer/jack of all trades-er Carlos Lopez created this Laferrari and while his efforts are real and meritorious, the result of his work is fake. Top speed: 217MPH. Horses: 1,035.
